The Unilab Midi Ripple Tank provides a simple and effective way for students to investigate the properties of waves. The ripple tank is completely self-contained, requiring minimal set-up compared to traditional equipment.

Simply add water and connect to a Power Signal Generator and a 12V DC Power Supply and you are ready to go.

The Unilab Midi Ripple Tank incorporates a built-in LED stroboscope to provide perfectly stationary images and the large front facing screen makes this ripple tank ideal for both demonstrations and student use.

The ripple tank comes complete with an extensive range of accessories, all housed in a custom foam insert, including three dippers and a selection of barrier shapes and lenses.

The whole ripple tank is housed within a Gratnells tray for easy transport and storage.

Additionally required equipment:

  • Water
  • Surfactant
  • 12V d.c. power supply (B8G85458)
  • Power Signal Generator (PP00051869)
  • 4 x 4mm leads
  • Compact unit, convenient size for easy storage.
  • All accessories are built-in with the foam insert making it easy to see if something is missing.

Applications include:

  • Properties of water waves
  • Properties of waves in general
  • Diffraction, Refraction, Reflection and Interference
  • Key Stage 3 Physics - Waves: Waves on water as undulations which travel through water with transverse motion; these waves can be reflected, and add or cancel – superposition.
  • Key Stage 4 Physics - Wave Motion: Transverse and longitudinal waves. Describe wave motion in terms of the wavelength and frequency of waves in water, explaining how these may be measured, that they are transverse, that it is the wave and not the water itself that travels; explain the relationship between velocity, frequency and wavelength.
  • GCSE Required Practical: Waves
  • Using the Ripple Tank in a darkened room will improve wave visualisation, but is not required.
  • If a Power Signal Generator is not accessible, the Unilab Midi Ripple Tank can also be driven using a Bench Signal Generator and Power Amplifier.
  • Ensure the Power Signal Generator and Power Supply are connected to the correct sockets on the Ripple Tank.
