How to celebrate Biology Week

Biology Week takes place in the first week of October each year.. But of course, we can think of ways to celebrate Biology all year round. We caught up with our in house technical experts Karen and Jackie to learn how they would celebrate Biology in school, or at home.

Why should I celebrate Biology?

Biology explores the wonders of the natural world, so make the time to deepen your knowledge of Biology and share your love of biology with others. You can inspire the next generation of Biologists and encourage them to explore careers in the biological sciences.

How you can celebrate Biology

Whether you're a seasoned biologist or simply curious about the subject, there are plenty of ways to get involved and enjoy the festivities.

1. Explore Biology themed events

Check for local Biology events happening in your area. The Royal Society of Biology has an exciting calendar of events you can join in with.

2. Join Biology related online actvities

Keep an eye out for virtual events, webinars, and discussions related to Biology. There are online resources and activities that you can participate in from the comfort of your home.

3. Visit a museum or zoo

Plan a trip to a natural history museum, botanical garden, or zoo. They offer educational visits for schools and other groups to learn about topics such as conservation or biodiversity. You could take a self guided visit for yourself or your family during your free time too.

4. Do some Biology practicals

Practical Biology skills are essential to the secondary science curriculum. You could focus on GCSE Biology required practicals for the KS4 students. Or set up some fascinating Biology practicals to engage KS3 students.

5. Go outside for Autumn inspired science activities

During the Autumn term, you could use the changing seasons and falling leaves to your student’s advantage.  Autumn is a fantastic time to inspire students using the great outdoors with activities such as identifying different species and their interactions; or thin layer chromatography.

6. Read Biology books and articles

Pick up a Biology book or two, or take a read of some Biology articles in publications, magazines or online. Reading can deepen your understanding of biological concepts and inspire an interest in learning more.

7. Engage on social media

Follow the Royal Society of Biology and other useful Biology profiles on social media platforms to stay updated on events. Share your own insights, and connect with fellow Biology enthusiasts too. Sharing is how science works!

8. Volunteer for conservation projects

Volunteering with local conservation projects allow you to contribute to real-world biological research and conservation efforts. As well as make a difference for your community now and into the future. You will also make new, friendly connections with the same passion for Biology as you.

9. Teach and learn

Share your love for Biology with others. Organise educational activities for children in groups such as Scouts. Engage in discussions with friends and family, or even offer to give a biology-related presentation at a local community group.

10. Reflect and appreciate

Take some time to appreciate the beauty and complexity of the natural world. How its living systems have evolved and interact to thrive in the environment they live in. It is also wonderful for your wellbeing, with fresh air and light exercise.
